  • Why should I choose Rockbuilt Lofts to build my loft? Rockbuilt Lofts is a fully licensed and insured company. We are locally owned and operated and are located near campus for year-round support. All of our lofts are guaranteed to pass inspection and are built by highly trained builders. Rockbuilt Lofts is MSU Alumni Owned and operated and is mid-Michigan's largest college dorm loft company. In addition, we pride ourselves on working with the Michigan State University authorities to provide the best over all loft building experience for students and university staff alike.

Is Rockbuilt Lofts licensed and insured? Yes. We will provide a copy of our updated license and certificate of insurance upon request.

Which loft is the best for my room/my needs? Please contact our office at (517) 316-9393 and our office staff will gladly assist you in choosing the proper loft for your
    dorm.

How much will my loft cost? The following prices are good for the 2009-2010 academic year:

            Lofts
            L-loft w/ladder - $330
            H-loft w/ladder - $270
            I-loft w/ladder - $260
Single loft (ladder built in) - $185

            Extras
            Extra Ladder - $25 each
            Safety rails - $15/bed
H lofts in rooms with high ceilings - $25 per bed

What is included in the cost of the loft? All materials and labor of constructing the loft are included in its price. Our single lofts have a ladder built into one end of the loft. All other lofts include one moveable ladder for student use. Extra ladders or safety rails may be purchased at the student's request for an additional fee (see FAQ - How much will my loft cost? for pricing information).

Will Rockbuilt Lofts rebuild a previously used loft for me? Yes, but it is only $60 less than a new build. Rockbuilt generally does not recommend rebuilding a previously used loft for a couple of practical reasons. The first is that because every dorm room is different and the majority of lofts built at MSU are custom cut to fit the dimensions and arrangements of each room, the loft will likely not fit into a new room without major revision. Only a free-standing loft (e.g. a single loft) could easily be reconstructed in any room. Rebuilding a loft is more time and energy consuming that constructing a new one. Secondly, the majority of the fee charged to build a new loft covers labor and operating costs; a minority of the fee covers the materials themselves. Consequently it is not much cheaper to rebuild an old loft than to build a new one. That being said, Rockbuilt Lofts may be willing to assist in the rebuilding of a previously used loft on a case by case basis outside of the main move-in weekend. If you have further questions, please contact us via phone or e-mail and we would be happy to assist you in any way we can.

When should I schedule my loft? All of our lofts are built on a pre-scheduled basis. Early registration is highly recommended, especially for the heavy demand slots during move-in weekend. You may schedule your loft when you know what dorm you will be living in. If you do not yet know which floor you will be on, we will set your appointment time once we receive that information from you. Appointments will be confirmed upon receipt of credit card information.

How do I schedule an appointment to get a loft built by Rockbuilt? Call (517) 316-9393 to set your appointment. Credit card information is required to secure your reservation. There is a $75 cancellation fee. Scheduling early is highly recommended due to the volume of calls we receive. Spots fill up quickly so don't wait!

How can I pay for my loft?   For your convenience Rockbuilt accepts cash, check or credit card. All appointments must be reserved with your credit card information ($75 will be charged for all cancellations). Full payment of your loft will be due at the time of build via cash or check. If you wish to use your credit card for full payment there will be a $10 charge added to your payment from the credit card company. (Instead of raising the cost of lofts for everyone because of the credit card charge we decided it more fair to charge on an individual basis)
Please call (517) 316-9393 to secure your date and time.

How will my appointment be confirmed? Once we receive your credit card information we will confirm your appointment directly over the phone.

How is my loft constructed? All lofts built by Rockbuilt are built to University specifications. We use 2x6 and 4x4 #2 grade construction lumber for the loft. Ladders and safety rails are constructed of 2x4 #2 grade construction lumber. Except for the free-standing single loft, all lofts are built from wall to wall to provide maximum stability and space beneath the loft. Because every dorm room is different, Rockbuilt custom cuts each loft to fit the dimensions and arrangements of the room. Cuts are made inside the room at the time of the scheduled appointment. There is minimal sawdust to be swept or vacuumed up after the loft is built, and vacuums may be checked out from the University with a student ID (see FAQ - What do I need to do to get my room ready for the loft builders? for more details).

How long will it take to have my loft built? Rockbuilt Lofts strives to arrive on time to the scheduled appointment. However, on any given day, some of our crews run slightly behind schedule while others run slightly ahead. These deviations occur especially later in the day. Therefore we ask that you allow our crews a window of about an hour on either side of your scheduled time. Once the builders arrive the loft will take somewhere between 20 minutes and an hour to build, depending upon the type of loft and preparation of the room (see FAQ - What do I need to do to get my room ready for the loft builders? for more details).

What if I have any questions or concerns about my loft during the year? A major advantage of choosing Rockbuilt Lofts to construct your loft is that we are a local, licensed and insured construction company. We pride ourselves on our service and the satisfaction of our customers. We are available at any time during the year to answer questions, respond to concerns and provide service for the lofts we build. Customer satisfaction is guaranteed.

What should I do If I have a hole in my wall from the loft? All holes must be reported to (517) 316-9393 at least a week prior to move out. We will send a crew out to patch the hole at no expense to you. Our company patches all holes ourselves and is not liable for any sent bills from the university. We are also not liable for any bills if we were not contacted and an appointment scheduled before student move out. There are no exceptions.

What do I need to do to get my room ready for the loft builders?

    Room Preparation
(This must be done before builders arrive)

    1. Bunks must be taken apart BEFORE the builders arrive...you can check out a wrench from the front desk with your student ID...remove the headboard and footboard and put them into storage...keep all metal hardware as well as the mattress and spring frame in the room.

    2. Check out a vacuum from the front desk. MSU policy is to make all the cuts right in the room, so there will be some sawdust and we do not clean it up.

    3. Remove any bookshelf that is sitting on top of your desk and place it in the hall.

    4. Clear off your desk.

    5. Remove all breakables from the room such as computers and TV's (put in hall or closet) We are not responsible for any breakables left in the room.

    6. If you are installing carpet and want it laid before the loft is built, make sure to have it installed BEFORE the builders arrive.

    7. Leave a one hour window on either side of your appointment time.
